Former Chief Justice of India reportedly reacted to the news of his Rajya Sabha nomination. Mr. Gogoi said that he will speak in detail after taking the oath. “I’ll go to Delhi probably tomorrow. Let me first take the oath then I will speak in detail to the media that why I accepted this and why I am going to Rajya Sabha,” ANI quoted Ranjan Gogoi as saying.
Mr. Gogoi was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the President of India Ramnath Kovind on Monday. The opposition parties and several leaders are questioning and raising concerns over the nomination of the former Chief Justice of India. Reacting to the nomination of Mr. Gogoi, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi wrote on Twitter, “Is it ‘quid pro quo’? How will people have faith in the Independence of Judges? Many Questions.”
It is to be noted that Ranjan Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India for 13 months between 2018 and 2019. Ranjan Gogoi is known for his opinion in the Ayodhya Case which ruled that the construction of the Ram Temple over historically disputed land in Ayodhya was lawful.
