Ashoke Pandit, an Indian Filmmaker, also the president of the Indian Film & Television Director’s Association recently made a bigoted comment on Journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani. This has become a reason behind a large number of reactions from users across social media sites.
On Sunday; on the eve of Deepawali, Arfa Khanum Sherwani who is a journalist working with The Wire wrote on Twitter about what she called ‘barbaric lockdown’ in Kashmir, wishing its end and ‘returning of light’ in the valley. Arfa wrote, “Day 84. No Kashmir, we have not forgotten you. This Diwali, you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are lighting a Chirag, a Diya for you. Hoping for the end of the barbaric lockdown and the return of the light to your lives soon. InshaAllah!”
To which, the filmmaker and social activist Ashoke Pandit replied calling Bagdadi as the father of Arfa Khanum Sherwani. Mr. Ashoke wrote, “Aapka ABBA #Bagdadi aaj America mein maara gaya hai. Phodo fatake aur Manao Diwali. [Your father Bagdadi is killed in America today. Burst crackers and celebrate Diwali.] This has got the attention of many on Twitter and Facebook.
A good human being and an excellent senior journalist, @khanumarfa is subjected to a range of Islamophobic attacks from all kinds of public persons. This response to her solidarity message for the incarcerated, economically devastated, demoralised Kashmiris, is one of the vilest. pic.twitter.com/YjGw1JpbtC

Despicable and shameful
This is despicable and shameful by @ashokepandit.
Ashoke is a known bigot and hatemonger but this abuse against a fellow Indian Muslim, @khanumarfa, is shockingly pathetic.
Ashoke does not represent the values of Hinduism, the culture of India, or the tenants of humanity. pic.twitter.com/aWtzYPiskm

A new low
This is as ugly as it gets,a man notorious for shrieking on media debates and known for his vitriolic rants has the gall to troll a noted journalist like @khanumarfa with expletives and thinks he has the impunity to call a dreaded terrorist her father.
A new low! https://t.co/bmHFoxmVQ4

While tweeting on the issue around the comment made by the filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, Pratik Sinha, the founder of AltNews has something to suggest. Pratik wrote, “We need a website where we can document such hate speech along with all the TV channels that invite such bigoted people as panelists, all the newspapers that ask these people to write columns, and document how hate is being mainstreamed in India. Anyone[Does anyone] wish to collaborate?”
